The Thumb sticks out into Lake Huron on three sides, which gives it lake-effect snow off the lake and a growing season a fortnight longer than the counties inland. Flint itself is far enough from the water to get the cold without the snow — and the 1953 Flint-Beecher tornado, the last F5 in Michigan, is still the state's deadliest.

Saginaw Bay is shallow, wide and points northwest, which makes it a surge and ice problem the open lake is not: the wind piles water into the bay and then drains it, and the ice road forms most winters. The bay also feeds its own lake-effect band inland, and the flat farm country west of it floods every spring.

The lakeshore counties here sit at the bottom of the Lake Michigan snow belt and take the longest fetch of any of them — a northwest wind crosses ninety miles of open water before it reaches Berrien and Van Buren. Inland it turns to rain within twenty miles, which is why the forecast line runs right down I-94.

Two lakes, one peninsula, and a snow belt on each side. The Lake Michigan bands bury Traverse City and the Leelanau, the Lake Huron side stays drier, and the middle runs cold enough that Gaylord averages more snow than anywhere else in the Lower Peninsula. The same water gives the fruit belt a season it has no business having at this latitude.

The Keweenaw is the snowiest place east of the Rockies that anyone lives in — 200 inches is an ordinary winter and the record season passed 390. Lake Superior never warms enough to stop feeding it, the same lake holds summer in the fifties on the shore, and the November gales that sank the Fitzgerald come through here every year.
